Script editor Matt Fitton said: "Past Forward is a pivotal story in the Seventh Doctor’s lifetime, as he says goodbye to two friends and hello to one more – but not necessarily in that order! We have a four-part story enveloping a two-parter, as Harry and Naomi’s TARDIS travels come to an end in a timey-wimey fashion that befits their ongoing story. Along the way, the Doctor runs into a face from his past, someone who perhaps was always destined to be his companion...
"I’ve been looking at how we might reintroduce Ray to the Doctor for quite a while now, but couldn’t pin down the practicalities of using the character. At last, however, the stars have aligned and we can welcome Sara Griffiths back to Doctor Who. I've chatted with her about Ray’s new direction and what she might have been up to in the intervening years, and we have plans... So yes, Ray the mechanic is back, some 20 years after Delta and The Bannermen - still revving her bike into adventure!
Of her return as Ray, Sara Griffiths said: "To have this opportunity to rejoin Doctor Who, to reconnect with Sylvester and then have these incredible scripts, it genuinely is one of the loveliest things that’s happened in my career. The writers have completely reminded, reinstated and then shown this way forward with Ray, and her dynamic with the Doctor, that I can feel so clearly."
