Weevils beneath the surface
Tube Strike, the first of three brand-new Torchwood audio dramas written by Gareth David-Lloyd, is released today from Big Finish Productions.
March, April and May’s releases in the Torchwood Monthly Range form the ‘Ianthology’, a trilogy of stories exploring different moments in the life of Torchwood’s coffee boy-turned-agent Ianto Jones. As well as writing the scripts, Gareth David-Lloyd stars in the role he originated in the BBC TV series.
Tube Strike is set during Ianto’s days working for Torchwood One in London. Alongside veteran Torchwood agent Tommy Pierce (Timothy Bentinck), Ianto must deal with a gang of Weevils on the loose in the tunnels of the London Underground.
Torchwood: Tube Strike is now available to purchase as a collector’s edition single-disc CD (+ download for just £10.99) or as a digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively here.
Building work on the London Underground has disturbed a nest of Weevils. The ravenous creatures are hunting for flesh. Can Torchwood One contain the feast?
Tube Strike also features Derek Elroy as Bill, Kay Bridgeman as Tia, and Robert Rackstraw as the Weevils.
Gareth David-Lloyd said: “I got the idea for Tube Strike from some ideas suggested by Torchwood producer, James Goss, and the horror aspect jumped out at me straight away. I’m a big fan of those 70s and 80s horror films, like An American Werewolf in London and Death Line, so writing a scary chase through the tunnels of the London Underground was something that I definitely fancied doing.
“I always enjoy writing for Ianto and Tommy because they’re so chalk and cheese; there’s lots of fun to be had, especially as their relationship develops. Ianto is finding his feet in the field, finding his agency and a bit of bravery, while he’s out with Tommy, who’s constantly berating him.”
Actor Timothy Bentinck added: “I love playing Tommy, and his double act relationship with Ianto. He’s fond of Ianto but doesn’t want him to know. He’s protective and paternal about this boy. Much teased is much loved!”
Tube Strike will be followed in the Torchwood Monthly Range by two further stories written by Gareth David-Lloyd and focusing on Ianto’s life before he joined Torchwood Three in Cardiff: Missing Molly, due for release in April, and Disco, due for release in May.
