Incoming Message - Space 1999 returns!
The Moonbase Alphans enter the Dragon's Domain in a brand-new box set of full-cast audio dramas from Big Finish Productions, based on Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s space opera classic!
Space: 1999 first launched in the UK on ITV in 1975 and chronicled a moonbase crew’s frantic fight for survival after a freak nuclear accident blasted them out of Earth’s orbit and into deep space...
Following the opening episode Breakaway and two further volumes of exciting audio adventures, Commander John Koenig (played by BAFTA-winning actor Mark Bonnar) once again returns to lead the Alphans through the unknown in two original tales and an audio reimagining of the nightmare-inducing TV story, Dragon's Domain (also the title of this box set).
Space 1999 Volume 3: Dragon's Domain, due for release in May 2023, is now available to pre-order as a 3-disc collector’s edition CD box set (+ download for just £19.99) or as a digital download only (for just £16.99), exclusively here.
The titles and writers of each story are as follows:
Skull in the Sky by Marc Platt
The Godhead Interrogative by Nicholas Briggs
Dragon's Domain by Nicholas Briggs
Producer David Richardson said: “It’s been far too long since we last visited Moonbase Alpha! It’s been a pleasure and a joy to reunite Commander Koenig and his intrepid crew for three more audio productions set far out in deep space. These stories are a feast for the ears and the mind!
“Dragon's Domain is one of the most loved episodes of Space: 1999, so we didn’t approach a remake lightly. The original TV script centred around the character of Alan Carter, before it was revised to centre on a new guest character called Tony Cellini. We’ve gone back to the original intent – in our version it’s Alan’s story, and the danger feels much closer to home...”
Mark Bonnar added: “Dragon's Domain was my favourite episode as a child! As is often the case, things go a little bit haywire. It gave me a very specific nightmare which has stayed with me forever.
“I think [Space: 1999] works very well on audio because we’re a visual species and very imaginative. What’s great about the series is that the sound design, as is the way with all Big Finish stuff, is taken very seriously, so that you conjure up all of the situations in the mind’s eye of the listener.”
The talented cast also returning to the audio series is Maria Teresa Creasey (as Dr Helena Russell), Clive Hayward (as Professor Victor Bergman), Timothy Bentinck (as Space Commissioner Simmons), Glen McCready (as pilot Alan Carter), Susan Hingley (as scientist Sandra Benes) and Amaka Okafor (as computer expert Dashka Kano).
Praise for Space 1999 Volume 2: Earthbound:
“Mark Bonnar and Maria Teresa Creasey continue to own their soundscapes. Listeners believe every level they’re conveying.”
– Sci-Fi Pulse
“Striking a happy balance between old and new, it provides an original character-based adventure, plus a smart re-working of a television episode which turns it into a high-stakes two-parter.”
– Indie Mac User
“This is where science fiction shines, when it holds up a mirror to real life and lets us see ourselves, and ‘Earthbound’ is such a great example of this.”
– Set the Tape
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
