ATA Girl - behind-the-scenes
Meet the (very nearly!) all female team behind ATA Girl. The first of our new Big Finish Originals range, ATA Girl is a fictionalised full-cast drama inspired by the heroic female pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary during WW2.
Behind this ambitious new project are two Big Finish stalwarts – Helen Goldwyn as producer (who listeners will recognise from The Prisoner, Survivors and Doctor Who), and Louise Jameson (Leela in Doctor Who, Dr Anne Reynolds in The Omega Factor and Jackie Burchall in Survivors) taking the director’s chair.
This project also introduces two new writers to Big Finish. Joining Jane Slavin (Doctor Who) and Helen Goldwyn, are Victoria Saxton and Gemma Page who pen the first two episodes of this aviation drama.
As producer Helen tells us: “As the themes throughout each episode were so resolutely female and embedded in the experience of ‘being a woman’, director Louise Jameson and I agreed that it would be interesting to work with an all-female production team on this occasion. The only exception was our script editor, John Dorney, who shall henceforth be known as an honorary woman!
“And what a joy the process has been. There’s definitely something magical about the energy in a roomful of creative women, all focused on the same goal.
Victoria and Gemma also helped research the project, to ensure historical accuracy and to help honour the legacy of these courageous women, visiting White Waltham airfield, the HQ of the ATA (which happens to be right by the Big Finish headquarters) – Victoria even took lessons to truly capture the sensation of flying!
ATA Girl showcases the highs and lows of life in the ATA, as well as the trials and tribulations of being a woman in the mid-twenty-first century. The fictionalised lead characters are based on extensive research of the real lives of the pilots and the challenges that women in wartime would have faced.
You can pre-order ATA Girl now at £17 on download, or it will be available at £20 on download on its release in April 2018.
