Big Finish Productions returns to the world of Gerry Anderson’s Space: 1999 today with the release of The Armageddon Engine, an audiobook reading of James Swallow’s exciting new novel.

The TV series, which ran from 1975 to 1977, followed the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha and their adventures as the Moon hurtled uncontrollably through space. This new adventure fits into the storyline of that original series, as Commander John Koenig, Alan Carter and Victor Bergman must undertake a desperate mission to save all life on Alpha.

The Armageddon Engine is written by James Swallow, who is a New York Times, Sunday Times and Amazon number one bestselling author of over 60 novels, as well as a BAFTA-nominated scriptwriter. The audiobook is narrated by Mark Elstob, an experienced voice actor also known for playing Number Six in Big Finish’s The Prisoner series.

Space: 1999 – The Armageddon Engine has a running time of approximately three and a half hours, and is now available to own as a digital download for just £16.99, exclusively here

Adrift in deep space, Commander John Koenig and the people of Moonbase Alpha face an uncertain fate when a planet-killing alien weapon at the heart of a sinister cloud diverts their lost Moon onto a fatal trajectory.

As each moment brings the Moon closer to total obliteration, Koenig leads a desperate mission into the unknown to save all life on Alpha. Does hope lie among a rag-tag colony of refugees hiding in the shadow of devastation? Or can the Alphans find a path into the heart of the war machine and end its destructive rampage? With time running out, the answer will mean the difference between survival… or annihilation.

Jamie Anderson, managing director at Anderson Entertainment, said: “This feels just like an original TV episode. I couldn’t be more chuffed that we’re able to do this, or with the result.

“The story is very Year One-esque; it sits very much in the original TV series canon. James pitched three synopses and this one was an instant hit with the Anderson team. We know James is a big Anderson fan, and he’s got a fantastic history with tie-in media and his own bestsellers. An ideal partner.”

Writer James Swallow added: “I’m really pleased to have this opportunity, and it means a lot to have the level of trust and freedom that Jamie and the Anderson team gave me in the writing.

“I wanted to draw from all my favourite elements of Space: 1999 and assemble a storyline that feels like it could be a part of the show – a lost episode that dovetails with everything in the series. I gave it a mix of the deep, cosmic narratives from Year One with a bit of the action-forward storytelling as seen in Year Two.”
