Big Finish Productions invited Gareth David-Lloyd to Ianto's Shrine in Cardiff Bay, to celebrate the life and legacy of his beloved Torchwood character.
In July 2009, Torchwood viewers were heartbroken when the beloved character Ianto Jones, played by Gareth David-Lloyd, was killed in action in episode four of the story Children of Earth.
Within days, fans had begun to pay tribute to the tea boy turned Torchwood agent by setting up an impromptu memorial to him at Cardiff Bay’s Mermaid Quay, the location used in the TV series as the entrance to the Torchwood hub.
“Ianto’s Shrine” remained in place for many years, with fans leaving notes, flowers, photos, and other memorabilia, commemorating what the character had meant to them, with many noting Ianto’s role in Torchwood’s boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ representation.
In March this year, however, Cardiff Bay management made the decision to remove the shrine due to health and safety concerns, as the wood and ironwork at the site is degrading, with the shrine set to be replaced by a new plaque once the repairs are completed.
Prior to the dismantling of the shrine, Big Finish Productions invited Gareth David-Lloyd to the site, where we presented him with a framed “gold disc” of the one-hundredth and final Torchwood main range audio drama, Fare Well.
We also filmed a special interview with David-Lloyd, reminiscing on the locations in Cardiff Bay which have become associated with Torchwood, as well as his time developing the popular character across the past decade of Big Finish's Torchwood adventures.
James Goss, the producer of the Torchwood range, said: “The shrine, like Ianto Jones himself, is a marvellous enigma. I’m not sure that when fans rushed down to the Bay in the aftermath of Children of Earth to lay flowers, they ever thought that the outpouring of grief would last longer than, maybe, a fortnight. But, like Ianto Jones, the shrine continued. People kept adding to it. It became an object of curiosity long after its moment had passed.
“In The Parting of the Ways, the Doctor tells Rose to leave the TARDIS on a street corner, and one day people will stop remarking on it, and the forgotten blue box will just fade away. But that never quite happened to the shrine. Yes, most people passing it don’t know why it's there, but for some, it reminds them of Ianto Jones and maybe it makes them pause and smile.”
