The Doctor was dead, to begin with. Killed alongside his beloved Jo Grant in an explosion in the UNIT labs. But Time Lords are notoriously hard to kill.

Because with UNIT under siege, the Brigadier is rescued by two familiar faces... the Doctor he first encountered, fighting the Yeti, and Jamie McCrimmon. With yet one more waiting in the wings.

They are all pawns in a deadly game of chess played by a being more powerful than any they’ve ever encountered before. And when you battle Death himself... can anyone even win?

Adapted from the original treatment by Bob Baker and Dave Martin for what later became the TV episode The Three Doctors.

Producer David O’Mahony said: “After Baker and Martin submitted the idea for Deathworld in 1972, the story had many challenges and went through multiple rounds of re-writes and changes to characters, locations and actors, to the point that The Three Doctors was now completely different to the story first conceived.

“John Dorney and script editor Simon Guerrier wanted to go back to the original concept and explore what that idea could have been. It’s in keeping with early ’70s films such as Sinbad with its mythical monsters, high stakes adventure, and rollercoaster storylines.”

“With the contribution of Stephen Noonan, Michael Troughton and Tim Treloar as our first three Doctors, and Frazer Hines, Katy Manning, and the brilliant Brigadier played by Jon Culshaw, we have a cast worthy of an anniversary adventure.”

Deathworld is the epitome of a Lost Story – taking a great idea and being able to fulfil it without the time and budget constraints of when it was pitched for television.”

Actor Michael Troughton said: “It's always good to have three Doctors together – you get real fireworks in the dialogue! It’s such an unusual, extraordinary story as well, set in Deathworld. It’s a shame it was never put on TV, but it’s great that it’s coming out now.”

Third Doctor actor Tim Treloar added: “Michael and Stephen give wonderful interpretations of their respective Doctors. What's lovely is remembering that juxtaposition that the Second Doctor and the Third Doctor had – that hatred of one another, but deep down they admired each other.”

And, Katy Manning, who plays companion Jo Grant, said: “This brought back to me that moment all those years ago when we filmed The Three Doctors, and that is such an extraordinary feeling. Just thinking about it, I’ve got goosebumps. “Every single actor that's ever played the Doctor has given it the two hearts – one from the actor and one from the incredible character – and they've all brought their own magic to it. They’re three such beautifully different characters, and listening to them all together in this much longer script than we had in The Three Doctors, it's fascinating.”

Reviews

This is a great return to the pure pulp era of Doctor Who, feeling very fast and high concept while maintaining a genuinely impressive sense of character dynamics where no-one gets left with nothing to do. Deathworld is pure fun, and a welcome addition to what have been two of the best Lost Stories releases to date. 10/10

John Dorney brings Bob Baker and Dave Martin’s original idea for Doctor Who‘s Tenth Anniversary celebration to life in a deliciously exciting way...It can never replace the beauty of The Three Doctors – nor should it. But as a story in its own right and a look at what could have been, it makes for an experience any Doctor Who fan should seek out.

Geek Vibes Nation

This story is nothing like The Three Doctors... it doesn't feel like deja vu. It works in the format of other Big Finish productions, in that it's been adapted very effectively as an audio drama.
