The War Doctor enters the Sontaran-Rutan war
Cover artwork and story details are revealed today for the fourth and final part of Sontarans vs Rutans, due for release in April 2024 from Big Finish Productions.
Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Sontarans first appearing in Doctor Who, this mini-series explores their never-ending war against the shapeshifting Rutans, with stories that cross over into the lives of four different Doctors.
The final instalment, In Name Only, sees the battle lines of the Sontaran-Rutan war brush up against an even greater conflict, the Last Great Time War. Jonathon Carley stars as the War Doctor, the Time War era incarnation originally played on TV by Sir John Hurt.
Sontarans vs Rutans: In Name Only is available to pre-order for just £10.99 (collector's edition CD + download) or £8.99 (download only), exclusively here.
In the depths of the Time War, a Rutan attack on a Time Lord facility leads to Gallifrey declaring a vicious reprisal. But not all Time Lords support the action. One thinks there's more to the situation than meets the eye. And this Time Lord... was once called the Doctor.
The Sontarans appearing in In Name Only are played by Dan Starkey (who, since 2008, has played many Sontarans on TV and audio), Christopher Ryan (The Young Ones, Doctor Who: The Sontaran Stratagem), and John Banks (Emmerdale). Big Finish regular Debbie Korley guest stars as Blaxill, a Time Lord in command of the Gallifreyan War Council.
Producer David Richardson said: “We’re into the Time War and there’s not a Dalek in sight as the Sontarans and Rutans are the focus of hostilities – and the Time Lords are about to make a move they will regret. Hold on tight, we’re into the endgame...”
Writer John Dorney added: “This is effectively the story that ties everything in the mini-series together, but at the same time it will work as a standalone adventure if it’s the first one you’ve listened to.
“It’s a hard one to describe because it follows on from the previous three other stories and the precise angle it takes is interesting – it’s so hard to talk about without giving anything away! It starts with the Rutans attacking the Time Lords and the consequences of that. The Doctor is concerned with this due to connections with the past, and it all begins to blend together with what’s come before.”
The complete Doctor Who – Sontarans vs Rutans series bundle is now available to pre-order for just £40 (collector's edition CD + download) or £32 (download only), exclusively here.
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
