The Morbius trilogy continues
An evil Time Lord returns from the dead, as Samuel West stars in Dark Gallifrey: Morbius – Part Two, released today from Big Finish Productions.
The first instalment of Dark Gallifrey: Morbius, released in April, saw the Time Lord battleship Proteus return home from Karn, its crew believing themselves victorious in the civil war against Gallifrey’s former dictator Morbius.
But Captain Argento (Rachel Atkins), first mate Mr Middlewitch (Hywel Morgan) and Sisterhood of Karn apothecary Gilda (Lara Lemon) soon discovered that their troubles were far from over.
Morbius, voiced for Big Finish by BAFTA-nominated actor Samuel West (All Creatures Great and Small, Slow Horses), is the Time Lord tyrant first encountered in 1976 Doctor Who television story The Brain of Morbius – and he’s on the rise once again.
Dark Gallifrey: Morbius – Part Two is now available to own for just £10.99 (collector's edition CD + download) or £8.99 (download only), exclusively here.
When disaster strikes the Proteus, Captain Argento and her crew must fight for their lives and the fate of all Time Lords. What is out there on the ice? Who hides in the impossible temple? As loyalties shift and secrets emerge, the cult of Morbius lies in wait to bring about the General’s return…
The cast list of Dark Gallifrey: Morbius – Part Two also includes Andrew French as Veritas, Mina Anwar as Rolko, Justin Avoth as the Shimmering Man, and Janet Henfrey as Narrata.
Writer Tim Foley said: “Morbius is such an interesting character. We know quite little about him, and there have been lots of different attempts in different media to talk about him. They’re all clashing and slightly contradictory, but that works for me – I’m telling a gothic thriller and there’s an edge of uncertainty to him.
“The more I started to dig into the building blocks of this character and what I could do with him, the more I realised I was sitting on a goldmine. With the Time Lord lore around him, and the extremely egotistical character, there was so much I could do and I had almost a blank slate. It was a dream come true to be writing this story about Morbius.”
Director Samuel Clemens added: “Morbius is a really interesting piece, because it’s the first time for quite a while we’ve brought back the character. In The Brain of Morbius, he becomes more of a physical entity, and in this, he’s more of a mental entity. It’s very different.
“When I found out Sam West was playing Morbius, I was very very excited, ’cause he’s a fantastic actor – and a fantastic director, so I was slightly intimidated! But he’s just so accommodating and lovely. It’s a joy to work with someone who’s put so much love and effort and care into it.”
Praise for Dark Gallifrey: Morbius – Part One:
“From the crashing organ of Howard Carter’s superb score to the closing reveal, this plays like a pulp adventure sequel fired sideways through Gallifreyan lore, and it’s glorious.”
Sci-Fi Bulletin“A wonderful exercise in world-building to usher in this new range. … The entire cast is superb.”
Sci-Fi Pulse“Manages to present a gripping and atmospheric locale and an engrossing core cast of characters to create plenty of intrigue and anticipation for just where this trilogy may yet go…”
