Peter Purves reads the latest Doctor Who - Short Trip
The First Doctor and his companion Steven are digging into ancient history, and uncovering ancient evil in this month’s Doctor Who – Short Trip release.
Peter Purves, who originated the role of space pilot Steven Taylor on television back in 1965, narrates Out of the Deep by John Pritchard, an historical audio adventure that takes the TARDIS team to the birthplace of civilisation.
But they are not the only people to have travelled to the ends of the Earth; and if they are not careful, the end of the Earth is exactly what they will witness.
Doctor Who – Short Trips are short stories, many written by some of Doctor Who’s most popular authors from the worlds of television, print, comics and audio, and read by a host of favourite Big Finish actors.

Drawn to Mesopotamia in the 1850s by an unknown signal, the Doctor and Steven cross paths with an archaeological expedition looking for one of the world’s first cities, Eridu. Darkness sits at the heart of Eridu, an ancient evil that is stirring.
Some things are buried for a reason.
Writer John Pritchard said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the things which lie beyond the event horizon of recorded history, and the myths of what mankind encountered there. In Out of the Deep, the Doctor and Steven uncover something from that long-forgotten past; not dead but dormant. I was interested in moral dilemmas and the dangers of power, but I also wanted to get a sense of elemental fear.”
Producer Alfie Shaw added: “There was a greater emphasis on world history in the Doctor Who historicals from the 1960s, and this was something I was keen to continue. John completely delivered on that with Out of the Deep, taking the Doctor and Steven to Mesopotamia in the Victorian era.
“A recording day with Peter Purves and Lisa Bowerman is always a delight, and Peter lifts this wonderful story off the page with his evocative take on the First Doctor.”
