Monster Memories
The Harmony Shoal, Clockwork Droids, and Silence cause trouble in Classic Doctors New Monsters 4: Broken Memories, released today from Big Finish Productions.
This brand-new box set features four full-cast audio adventures, in which Doctors and companions from the classic era of Doctor Who are pitted against enemies from the post-2005 TV series.
The Harmony Shoal – alien brains who insert themselves into the bodies of unwilling hosts, as seen in The Husbands of River Song (2015) and The Return of Doctor Mysterio (2016) – star in their first ever audio story. The Shoal’s latest scheme catches the attention of the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah Jane Smith (Sadie Miller, daughter of original TV actress Elisabeth Sladen).
Then, the Clockwork Droids, the well-dressed but murderous maintenance robots from 2006’s fan-favourite episode The Girl in the Fireplace, also make their Big Finish debut. They’re up against the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) and his companion Mel (Bonnie Langford).
The second half of the box set comprises two connected stories featuring the Silence, who – in case you’ve forgotten – are the memory-wiping aliens first seen in 2011 TV story The Impossible Astronaut. Now, it’s the turn of the Eighth and Seventh Doctors (Paul McGann and Sylvester McCoy) to encounter the Silence (played by Nicholas Briggs, Big Finish executive producer and the voice of many Doctor Who monsters across TV and audio).
Doctor Who – Classic Doctors New Monsters: Broken Memories is now available to own as a collector’s edition 4-disc CD box set (+ download for just £24.99) or digital download (for just £19.99), exclusively here.
The four exciting stories in this box set are:
Invasion of the Body Stealers by Jonathan Morris
Visiting the crystal forests of Systalzyn, the Fourth Doctor and Sarah encounter a crashing spaceship and race to find survivors…
But not everyone they meet on this colony world is in their right mind – the body-hopping Harmony Shoal have set their sights on invasion!
The Queen of Clocks by Jacqueline Rayner
The Sixth Doctor and Mel come to the rescue when they find a castle under siege from Clockwork Droids.
But in a kingdom run with painstaking precision, time is running out for the Queen of Guyenne…
The Silent Priest by David K Barnes
In search of solace from the Time War, the Eighth Doctor is caught between rival criminals and the law in the city of Sunset.
Who is the mysterious Priest with the key to ending the violence? And if the Doctor really has visited Sunset before, why can’t he remember?
The Silent City by David K Barnes
Sunset City is thriving, the tourists are spending. But something about the place doesn’t make sense – and the casino seems to be in the business of redistributing the wealth.
In the midst of it all, the Seventh Doctor faces the consequences of actions he has yet to take…
Doctor Who – Classic Doctors New Monsters: Broken Memories has a star-studded guest cast, including Juliet Aubrey (Primeval, Middlemarch), Paterson Joseph (Wonka, The Leftovers), Finty Williams (Gosford Park, The Importance of Being Earnest), Mina Anwar (The Sarah Jane Adventures, The Thin Blue Line), and Genevieve Gaunt (Knightfall, The Royals).
Actor Sadie Miller said: “Invasion of the Body Stealers brings to mind for me a lot of those monster B-movies that I grew up watching with my dad. It brings together that very old style of monster creature feature whilst also posing interesting modern-day questions about transplanting, swapping body parts, and how to facilitate living on as a species, so it has a lovely mix of old and new.”
Colin Baker added: “I remembered the Clockwork Droids from The Girl in the Fireplace. The visual imagery in it was very dramatic. And then when I read this story, which is written by Jacqueline Rayner, one of the masters of the best Big Finish stories ever, I knew it was gonna be good, and of course it is – it’s got drama, deception, lots of pathos, and it’s got Bonnie Langford, what more can you want?”
And Paul McGann said: “The Silence are properly spooky, because there’s something melancholic, deeply sad and weird about them. Of course they’re scary and threatening, but kind of heartbreaking as well. I like that, that’s a good mix, that’s a proper Who mix.”
