Doctor Who - The War Doctor 4: Reviews
Released in February, the word on Sir John Hurt's last outing as The War Doctor has been enthusiastic and positive, while sad and poignant...
February's release of Doctor Who - The War Doctor 4: Casualties of War marked the end of our War Doctor series, and came as a fitting tribute to Sir John Hurt's brief time as The Doctor, and his huge, much-regarded career beyond it.
"Casualties of War is a fitting end to Big Finish’s War Doctor series and an essential piece of ‘Doctor Who’ for all," writes Ian McCann of We Are Cult, "Sir John Hurt gives a magnificent final performance as the man we all know and love who’s forced to do what is neccessary."
Blogtor Who's look at the set judged, "From the beginning of the War Doctor's time with Big Finish starting with the outstanding ‘Only the Monstrous’ to this stunning new conclusion, all Doctor Who fans will relish and enjoy a showcase of just what made Sir John Hurt a formidable Doctor." Sci-Fi Pulse has similar sentiments: "This final set of War Doctor stories also acts as Sir John Hurt’s swan song from Big Finish and Doctor Who and it’s quite a song to go out on."
Sci-Fi Bulletin's look at opening story Pretty Lies mentioned, "(Writer Guy) Adams captures the Dalek mindset brilliantly – particularly in the scene where a commander requests reinforcements, and then again at the end of the episode – as well as the conflicting impulses in anyone covering war who’s supposed to remain objective."
Gallifrey Archive had this to say on the series' concluding story: "The Enigma Dimension is the culmination of everything that the War Doctor had been through; and it really ends the War Doctor’s new stories on a high. Well done to all involved, and I’ll say it again, we’ll miss you, John Hurt.."
