Discover some hidden gems from the early days of Big Finish
Big Finish will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, and we've worked with some incredible talent over the years. Here we showcase some of our releases featuring actors who have since become household names and achieved global success.
David Tennant
Any fan of Big Finish or Doctor Who will recognise David Tennant. David became the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor back in 2005 in The Christmas Invasion, and has continued as the Tenth Doctor from the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who here at Big Finish (with Volume 2 releasing in November!). However, David Tennant actually met the Daleks before appearing on the television show. In Dalek Empire 3, he plays Galanar in the fight against the Daleks, finding evidence of their menace throughout the cosmos. Each of the stories in Series 3 of Dalek Empire are £5 each on CD or download, or you can buy as a bundle for £24 on CD or £22 on download.
David also crossed paths with the Seventh Doctor and Ace in Colditz, a Doctor Who Main Range tale from 2001 where the Third Reich attempts to seize control of the TARDIS. This adventure, which also introduces Tracey Childs as Klein, companion and adversary to the Seventh Doctor, is £2.99 on download.
And in March 2005, David played the titular character in The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, where he battles against the Disruptors in a parallel world where many things are familiar - but nothing is the same. This is available on CD for £9.99 or download for £5. Allons-y!
Benedict Cumberbatch
Before he became Sherlock Holmes on our television screens, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch joined the ranks of Big Finish’s other archaeologists Bernice Summerfield and River Song in the Seventh Doctor story Forty-Five, Benedict played Howard Carter, the egyptologist who discovered Tutankhamun, and unearths an ancient secret buried in the Valley of the Kings.
Hayley Atwell
Another Marvel name! Before Agent Carter was saving the world, Hayley Atwell contributed her talents to a very popular Big Finish tale. In The Blood of The Daleks Hayley played scientist Asha Gryvern, opposite Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor and Sheridan Smith in her first outing as companion Lucie Miller. You can hear an exclusive edit of the first part here.
And Hayley also starred opposite Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor and India Fisher’s Charlotte Pollard in The Doomwood Curse.
Samuel Barnett
Whilst starring as Netflix’s Dirk Gently, Big Finish have had the pleasure of working with Samuel Barnett in several different productions. He’s starred in ancient Roman legal thriller Cicero, and you can hear an intriguing teaser here. For followers on Instagram, you'll see that more Cicero recordings are happening....
He’s also joined Torchwood as Norton Folgate, time travelling from the 1950s to help, and often hinder, the current Torchwood team. You can find him in The Torchwood Archive, Torchwood Outbreak and Ghost Mission (recently voted by Doctor Who Magazine readers their Number #1 Torchwood story of the year!).
Alexander Vlahos
Fans of BBC and Canal+’s Versailles will surely recognise the voice of Alexander Vlahos, and Big Finish has had the great pleasure of working with him to create The Confessions of Dorian Gray, the literary classic character given a new life in a world where Dorian Gray was real, and his friendship with Oscar Wilde spawned the notorious novel. Listen to the first tale here.
He’s also starred in Big Finish’s first Shakespeare release as the famed Prince of Denmark, Hamlet.
And he had an unforgettable performance in the first volume of The Diary of River Song opposite Alex Kingston and Paul McGann.
