Actor Gareth David-Lloyd said: “I'm a massive horror fan. I love tension, and suspense, and fear. And when horror and folklore combine, I get very excited, so I fell in love with this script straight away.” 

Co-writer Lauren Mooney told Doctor Who Magazine: “The Mari Lwyd is an amazing tradition, and it’s not ostensibly frightening in the delivery of it; it’s a community pastime. But there’s always something interesting about ‘How far would you have to nudge something familiar before it began to feel malign?’” 

Co-writer Stewart Pringle added: “It didn’t feel like you would have to nudge the Mari Lwyd very far! Ianto Jones tries to hoard Christmas like a miser and gets the kind of payback that misers always get when they try to hoard things at Christmas!”
