Heavenly trouble for Torchwood Soho
Alternative artwork, audio trailer and full cast details are today revealed for Torchwood Soho: Ascension, the latest box set following the '50s-era alien investigators, due for release July 2024.
Is the end of the world really nigh? A number of groups believe so – and what’s odder, they’re all vanishing.
Have they really gone to heaven, or is something far worse happening? It’s Torchwood. Obviously something far worse is happening.
The Torchwood Soho team return for a thrilling new adventure set in 1950s London, told across six half-hour episodes in one box set.
Leading the investigation is the duplicitous agent Norton Folgate (Samuel Barnett, star of BBC America’s Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency). His team are Sergeant Andy Davidson, on loan from the 21st century (with Tom Price reprising the beloved character from the Torchwood TV series), Gideon Lyme, Norton’s sort-of boyfriend (Joe Shire, Trollied), and his resurrected former boss Lizbeth Hayhoe (Dervla Kirwan, who listeners may know from the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas special, The Next Doctor).
Torchwood Soho: Ascension is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set (+ download for just £22.99) or a digital download only (for just £18.99), exclusively here. The collector's edition jewel case features reversible "angelic" and "demonic" cover artworks by Sean Longmore.
The six episodes in this box set, all scripted by James Goss, are:
1. Burning Bright
When carol singers on the runway bring down a plane, Torchwood investigate.
2. Chariot of Fire
The race is on to stop the world ending at midnight. Norton has it all under control.
3. The Invisible Worm
In Moscow, the true power of Ascension is revealed.
4. We Have Built Jerusalem
It's up to Lizbeth, Andy and Gideon to save the world now.
5. Dark Satanic Mills
Come on holiday, all ye faithful! What is going on on Salisbury Plain?
6. Fearful Symmetry
As the net tightens, does the human race have one last use for Torchwood?
The cast list for Torchwood Soho: Ascension also includes Greg Austin (Charlie from Doctor Who spin-off Class), Ali Bastian (Hollyoaks, The Bill), Naana Agyei-Ampadu (The Wheel of Time), Michael Higgs (Wizards vs Aliens, Eastenders), and David Sterne (Detectorists).
Writer and producer James Goss said: “All of the Torchwood Soho stories take their inspiration from Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass stories. So Ascension is, like the fourth Quatermass story, all about this mysterious alien entity that people begin to worship and which transports people away.
“We used that as the starting point for “What if 1950s England suddenly discovered that Heaven is real?” and tried to find an approach even more cynical than Nigel Kneale, which is very difficult! So the idea is: if it was suddenly discovered that people went to Heaven, how does this change the world, how would governments behave, and how can Norton Folgate use this to his own advantage? And the answer is: messily.”
Please note: Torchwood contains adult material and may not be suitable for younger listeners.
The above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
