Producer David Richardson said: "Our run of epic movie-length single-writer War Doctor stories continues, with a beautiful script written by award-winning Timothy X Atack. This is absolutely top-tier stuff - a bold, fiercely imaginative and innovative tale populated by unique guest characters and layered with the gamut of human emotions. It's an absolute ride that had us on the edge of our seats during the studio recordings - trust me, this is something very special indeed."
Writer Timothy X Atack added: "The fun thing with this one was being able to take a self-contained story within the Time War and stretch it out as far as possible. The idea right from the start was to introduce some really vibrant, interesting characters, and then give them a lovely complete arc, with the War Doctor along for the ride. I knew that I could really go for the emotional jugular with that!"
Jonathon Carley said: "It is a heck of a ride! The War Doctor is in this grey space in between the Time Lords and the Daleks, this sort of neutral good, so to find other 'grey area' figures to unite with is a really interesting idea. But the spin on this which is really cool is that it’s not the Doctor taking the initiative – he gets recruited by outsiders and is on the back foot."
Director Helen Goldwyn added: "When I first read all three scripts, I thought, what an incredible achievement – the complexity of these characters, the history of them, the subtext of all of it. "It's really so multi-layered, this whole arc of stories. I would describe it almost as a Greek tragedy, because we know there's going to be martyrdom and sacrifice at the end, inevitably, and we really do get that on a vast scale."
