On returning to the role he first played in 1989, Marcus Gilbert said: "Bumping into Angela is always good. She's a wonderful lady, and I'm so happy to see her. It's the character development as well, after so many years – it's a whole other dimension, which gives us a lot to do and a lot to enjoy."
Producer Alfie Shaw said: "The series has been building to Ancelyn ever since it started and it's great to end my run on UNIT by bringing him back. Script editor Rob Valentine and I knew when we were planning the two sets that we had to finish with this.
"Brave New World has resisted bringing in returning elements while the characters and the world were bedded in, but we couldn’t hold off on this forever. The dynamic between Ancelyn and Bambera is one of the highlights of Battlefield, and it’s been a blast reuniting them.
"Knightfall follows on directly from Fractures, with the two sets essentially forming one really bad week for UNIT. It started with a Kaiju attack and now they’ve been thrown into the midst of an inter-dimensional Cold War. We finally go to the Albion referenced in Battlefield and explore how it's changed after losing both Arthur and Merlin."
Script editor and writer Robert Valentine said: "Since we first started thinking about bringing Brigadier Winifred Bambera to Big Finish Productions, we always knew the heart of her story is how she lost and how she might regain the love of her life, Ancelyn, knight of Camelot – and finally, we're here!
"Knightfall is an epic three-part adventure that's about to pull Bambera and her UNIT team into a whole other universe of swords, sorcery, and one chance in a million of a fairytale ending."
This box set features the final performance of Marcus Gilbert, who originally played Ancelyn back in 1989, and reprised the role in these episodes, recorded before he sadly passed away in January 2026.
Producer Alfie Shaw said: "I only met Marcus during the three days we shared together in studio. He was charming, witty and kind. It was a privilege to spend that short amount of time with him. It was clear how much affection he and Angela had for each other, and their joy at being reunited and getting to work together again was the highlight of those recording days."
On the day of recording, Angela Bruce reflected on her audio reunion with Marcus Gilbert: "It's been amazing, a rather special day. It's continuing from that time when Ancelyn went off and left Bambera, and exploring what happened next. It gets emotional just seeing him again, and it's wonderful writing to bring this together and finish this love story between two worlds. Love transcends all, and that's quite wonderful.
"Working on this story, there's been a lot of laughter, a lot of joy. But then there's a time when I'm outside, sitting with Marcus, desperately trying to drink in, what's happened to you since I last saw you? How are you? You connect into it, and it's that moment where you just pick up the hat and you start again, it's wonderful. I'm very grateful for that friendship."
