The War Doctor Soldiers On
Jonathon Carley joins a ragtag gang of warriors in The War Doctor Rises: Unknown Soldiers, a full-cast audio drama box set available now from Big Finish Productions.
As the Time War rages across the cosmos, an unlikely crew of outcasts form a pact to end the conflict once and for all. Their target: a legendary warrior, whose assassination at a precise point in history will create a chain reaction that sets the whole universe free...
The adventures of the War Doctor (Jonathon Carley) continue today in The War Doctor Rises: Unknown Soldiers, an epic audio drama told across three hour-long episodes, all written by Timothy X Atack and available now as a box set.
This time, the Doctor has been recruited into a band of unlikely antiheroes, including Pars the disgraced Time Lord (Isla Blair, known for Doctor Who: The Kings Demons and Blake’s 7), Og-One and Og-Two the Ogrons (Andrew James Spooner), and Ormarelle the Movellan (Amanda Shodeko). And then there’s silicon-based ex-king Lunim (Phillipe Bosher) and Bevvakk the Squirrn, a hamster-sized psychopath (Simon Kane).
What do all these characters have in common? A mission – to travel into the heart of the Time War and eliminate the Blind Bomb Maker (Adam Martyn). That’s hard enough, but they also have to learn to work with each other. And then the Daleks (Nicholas Briggs) join the fray…
The War Doctor Rises: Unknown Soldiers is now available to pre-order for just £22.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £18.99 (digital download only), exclusively here.
Lead actor Jonathon Carley said: “It is a heck of a ride! The War Doctor is in this grey space in between the Time Lords and the Daleks, this sort of neutral good, so to find other ‘grey area’ figures to unite with is a really interesting idea. But the spin on this which is really cool is that it’s not the Doctor taking the initiative – he gets recruited by outsiders and is on the back foot.”
Director Helen Goldwyn added: “When I first read all three scripts, I thought, what an incredible achievement – the complexity of these characters, the history of them, the subtext of all of it.
“It's really so multi-layered, this whole arc of stories. I would describe it almost as a Greek tragedy, because we know there's going to be martyrdom and sacrifice at the end, inevitably, and we really do get that on a vast scale.”
Praise for The War Doctor Rises: Morbius the Mighty, the previous box set in the series:
“Jonathon Carley is superb as the War Doctor. He really does sound uncannily like the late John Hurt.”
CultBox“Yet another fantastic story for both the War Doctor and for Morbius.”
Who Review“An old-school treat from beginning to end.”
