Freed from his exile, the Third Doctor has returned to a life of setting things right across time and space – but his actions have consequences, including for his friends back on Earth. 

In the epic six-part adventure Operation: Vengeance, written by Tim Treloar and Nicholas Briggs, the Doctor and Sarah Jane visit the planet Konzomia, a planet he’d previously liberated with the help of Jo Grant (Katy Manning). 

But the evil Raelchun (Gareth Armstrong) has vowed revenge. To stop his plot, the Doctor and Sarah, with the Brigadier (Jon Culshaw) by their side, must travel to Dunkirk, 1940, where the life of Private Terry Grant (Max Bowden, known for EastEnders and Waterloo Road) – Jo’s father – hangs in the balance.

The Doctor makes an unexpected return trip to the planet Konzomia, this time with Sarah Jane Smith. The traumas of his previous visit, with Jo Grant, are apparently long forgotten.

I’m very excited that it’s a huge script as well, because for Sarah, we don’t often do these big six- or seven-parters. You really get to explore Sarah as a character through the big arc, and it feels much more cinematic. 

“The story is so packed with different elements – sci-fi, stuff on Earth, history, and lots of really fun, very silly moments that are brilliant. But there’s also a heaviness to it that I think is important – it’s got a message without ramming it home too heavily.” 

And, Katy Manning, who makes a guest appearance as Jo, said: “The Doctor and I have this wonderful, heartfelt moment together. It was lovely and a very, very great story from Tim, who of course is a great war expert, and there are some very interesting things about that in here.”
