Suzie’s Connection Issues
Indira Varma and Jason Watkins star in Torchwood: Bad Connection, a brand-new full-cast audio drama, released today from Big Finish Productions.
Torchwood’s devious agent Suzie Costello (played by Indira Varma, known for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Game of Thrones, and this year’s Doctor Who episode Rogue) makes her return to Big Finish audio for the first time since 2023 in this month’s thrilling new adventure, Bad Connection.
The story also stars the BAFTA-winning actor Jason Watkins (McDonald & Dodds, The Crown) as Emlyn Crook, a fussy librarian who answers a ringing phone box and begins a long conversation with a stranger – Suzie Costello.
Suzie has called to warn Emlyn of a dangerous creature stalking the streets. Can he trust the woman on the other end of the line? He’ll have to if he wants to survive the night.
Torchwood: Bad Connection is now available to own as a collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99) or as a digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively here.
A lonely man is walking past a telephone box when he notices it’s ringing. On the other end of the line is a woman telling him he’s in terrible danger.
Will someone finally listen to Suzie Costello? And will she save Emlyn Crook?
Bad Connection also features Ulrika Butt, Alex Hewitt, Arthur Hughes, Rhys Jennings, Bharti Patel, Rameet Rauli, and Matthew Woodyatt as the passersby.
Writer Aaron Lamont said: “Bad Connection is probably the most high-concept idea I’ve ever had. It started off as ‘The Mist in a phone box’ but perhaps it’s better described as ‘Alien in a phone box’, specifically the scene where Sigourney Weaver’s trapped in a cupboard with a big nasty monster looking in on her. And that’s probably all you need to know!”
Actor Indira Varma added: “I like Suzie. She's a loner and she's trying to reach out to people, but she's so abrasive that nobody wants her. But there's nuance in there – it's fun to show the light and the dark, when there's more layers to a character.”
And, her co-star Jason Watkins added: “Emlyn’s a librarian. Who doesn't want to play a librarian? It’s quite touching between them, because he comes under the influence of Suzie and is led by her. They’re two sides of the same coin, and maybe that's why they bounce off each other so well, but along the way, they're both heroic.”
Torchwood contains adult material and may not be suitable for younger listeners.
Bad Connection is the 89th release in the Torchwood monthly range. Big Finish listeners can purchase it as part of a six-release multibuy bundle including Torchwood 85 to 90, for just £60 (collector’s edition CD + download) or £50 (download only), or a twelve-release multibuy bundle of Torchwood 85 to 96, for just £110 (on CD + download) or £96 (on download).
