Return of the Krillitane and more!
The ability-stealing aliens are back, and they’re just one of the monsters making a return in Classic Doctors New Monsters: Faithful Friends, due for release in January 2025.
The fifth full-cast audio box set in the Classic Doctors New Monsters series will comprise four audio adventures pitting classic-era Doctors against monsters created for the post-2005 series of Doctor Who, and two of these stories will feature the Big Finish debut of the ruthless Krillitane.
When the Tenth Doctor encountered them in 2006 TV episode School Reunion, the Krillitane appeared to be demonic bats. But with their power to adopt the appearance and abilities of species they conquer, what form will they take when they meet the Second and Seventh Doctors (Michael Troughton and Sylvester McCoy)?
Doctor Who – Classic Doctors New Monsters: Faithful Friends is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 4-disc CD box set (+ download for just £30.99) or digital download (for just £24.99), exclusively here.
The four stories in this box set are:
The Krillitane Feint by John Dorney
The Dying Breed by Tim Foley
The Krillitane Relic by John Dorney
Five Hundred Ways to Leave Your Lover by Tim Foley
The Krillitane Feint stars Michael Troughton, Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury as the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe, as the TARDIS lands in a research base where disturbing experiments are being carried out.
And, The Krillitane Relic stars Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor, alongside Sara Griffiths as Ray, reprising her role from 1987 TV story Delta and the Bannermen. At the time, the production team considered making Ray the Doctor’s companion – and in this adventure, she is!
The Krillitane Relic guest stars Colin McFarlane (recently announced as returning to the Whoniverse in the spin-off TV series, The War Between the Land and the Sea), and features the Big Finish debut of Dame Sheila Hancock. Sheila previously appeared in Doctor Who as Helen A in the Seventh Doctor TV story, The Happiness Patrol (due for release on Blu-ray as part of The Collection: Season 25 in October 2024).
Writer John Dorney said “The Krillitane are a really fascinating monster, with their unique ability to steal traits from other species, but that also means they’re really challenging to bring back, because by definition they have to be doing something new every time. They can’t even look like they did in School Reunion!
“So, my approach to writing these was to watch the TV episode, read the books… and then studiously avoid them, look for new angles. You’ve got a traditional Troughton base-under-siege with a monster on the loose, and the Seventh Doctor meeting an old friend – while with another old friend – but what the Krillitane are up to this time, you’ll have to wait and see…”
The other two stories in the box set feature the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker), Leela (Louise Jameson) and K9 (John Leeson) meeting the Lupari and the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) versus the Monks. More story details will be revealed in due course.
