Indira Varma deals with unexpected motherhood in Torchwood: Child Free, a brand-new full-cast audio drama, available now from Big Finish Productions.
It’s a typical Friday night in Cardiff: Suzie is investigating mysterious energy signals, Hywel is on his stag do. The two bump into each other… and by the next morning, they have a baby.
In this latest release in the Torchwood audio drama range, Child Free, Indira Varma – recently seen in Doctor Who: Rogue, as well as Game of Thrones and Creature Commandos – returns as the amoral agent Suzie Costello, who faces one of her most unusual problems yet.
The man sharing Suzie’s baby situation is Hywel, voiced by Arthur Hughes, star of TV series Shardlake and The Jetty. The cast also includes Bharti Patel as Emily and Rhys Jennings as Chester.
Will Suzie be able to uncover the true origin of this new family member? And in the meantime, how will the mismatched duo fare as parents?
Torchwood: Child Free, written by Holly Robinson and George Fletcher, is now available to own for just £8.99 (download to own) or £10.99 (download to own + collector’s edition CD), exclusively here. Please note: the collector’s edition CD is strictly limited to 1,000 copies and will not be re-pressed.
Looking for a mysterious energy signal, Suzie bumps into Hywel, who is having doubts about getting married tomorrow.
The next morning, they wake up with a baby and a whole lot of problems.
Child Free is the Big Finish writing debut of Holly Robinson and George Fletcher. Fletcher said: “This is a play about adulthood and letting go of childhood. We wanted to explore the strange moment where suddenly all of your mates are making this massive life choice, and sometimes with a lot of ease.
“And you look at them and go, wow, you really think that you’re able to do this? Why don’t I think I’m able to do this? There’s something about the world of Torchwood, which is so sleek and urban – and what’s it like when you land all of the mess and sprawl of a newborn baby into that?”
His co-writer Holly Robinson added: “It was really exciting to do this story with a character like Suzie. Indira Varma was obviously so brilliant, and Suzie has this real advantage for writers, where there’s a real clarity to her character. Cold and calculating and pragmatic. But there’s also so much room to explore and imagine around her.”
Torchwood contains adult material and may not be suitable for younger listeners.
